On September 12, 2003, the CompTIA 2001 A+ Operating System Technologies (#220-222) and Core Hardware (#220-221) exams left the adaptive (20 to 30 question) format behind and returned to a conventional linear format. After this date, no CompTIA exams will be in adaptive format.
The main thrust for this change in exam format is to allow CompTIA to more smoothly test new exam questions. An example of this is the testing of the new 2003 A+ exam questions, classified as "unscored" questions, in the existing version (2001) of the A+ exams. This return to a conventional exam format will lessen or eliminate the need for CompTIA to come out with beta exams. In terms of the soon to appear conventional format 2001 A+ exams, they will likely have 80 questions.
