A Web Developer, also known
as a web programmer, software developer, web designer, and application
programmer, is an IT professional who creates programs that run predominantly
on the web, and are accessible either via the public Internet or private intranet.
Duties of a web developer
typically include specifying an online system, designing a web application to
meet the specifications, coding the application, testing the application and
maintaining it. With the complexity of modern systems as well as with the
prevalence of disparate technical teams, well honed interpersonal skills are
required. Although actual programming is still the main task for this job role,
a significant amount of time will likely be spent in communication with customers
and fellow team members. Since internal code documentation, software
development cycle documentation, and some online content creation will
generally be required, decent writing skills are beneficial.
A person may consider
entering this field after attaining a Computer Science or Computer Engineering
university degree or a one or two year computer or web diploma from a local
technical institute. Although some web developers are quite proficient without
this recommended educational background, many are finding a tough time getting
a decent job without at least some relevant certifications. In any event, some
artistic and creative talents, such as when handling graphics, and an ability
to smartly lay out web pages and web site navigation are advantageous, as are attention
to detail, understanding of basic business needs, and strong problem solving
skills.
A web developer, as he or
she gains experience, generally achieves more responsibility in his or her firm.
Getting the right mix of training and hands on experience will accelerate the
career growth of a web developer. Eventually, the web developer could advance
to become a lead application developer, graphics artist, or move more towards
project management or even an editorial role.

dependent on an IT professional’s particular skill set, experience and geographic
location. However, talented web developers can attain salaries around $65,000
